The Narratological Analysis of Novel King Rat by China Miéville
Bečan, Martin ; Charvát, Martin (advisor) ; Češka, Jakub (referee)
This thesis deals with the analysis of the British author's China Miéville's literary debut King Rat. For the analysis, I used especially semiotically/semiologically oriented narratology, the thesis therefore draws especially from the methods used in Roland Barthese's, Tzvetan Todorov's and Lubomír Doležel's works. It also uses methods of Gérard Genette, Seymour Chatman and Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan. I analysed categories from the domain of narratology, specifically: the narrator, story, characters, space (surroundings) and the time.
Characters of Space in the Trilogy Trýznivé město by Daniela Hodrová
Macháčková, Klára ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Wiendl, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis aims to interpret the trilogy Trýznivé město (subsuming parts called Podobojí, Kukly and Théta) by the Czech novelist and literary scholar Daniela Hodrová. A complex structure of the novel is in the analysis "opened" through the categories of space and characters; an axis of the thesis is the idea that in the poetics of D. Hodrová, some places can acquire certain features of living creatures (such as memory, free will, temper etc.) and vice versa, that some characters can coalesce with the space they inhabit. In spite of a firm mutual connection between the two categories, they will be discussed separately, in the following order: after having defined the background (using mainly theoretical works of D. Hodrová as secondary sources), firstly, we will focus on the localization of particular topoi (i.e. "literary loaded" places, e.g. the mountain, the pass, the abyss etc.) and on the description of their connotations in terms of the general sense of the trilogy; the attention will be also given to the non-topographical places (i.e. objects or parts of the body). Then, we will consider the issue of characters, primarily their ambivalent status between personalities, though fictional, and mere literary constructs performing certain functions, and also their transformations...

Don't Leave Me: Narratological Film Analysis
Horyna, Martin ; Svatoňová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Čeněk, David (referee)
The aim of Don't Leave Me: Narratological Film Analysis thesis is to determine through analysis of the aforementioned film the techniques of documentary filmmakers being used to lead the viewer to discover a coherent plot structure in the content, and to ascertain whether DON'T LEAVE ME systematically uses some methods of the classical film. Texts of Bill Nichols were used to describe the rhetorical strategies of documentary films. The selected theoretical basis of the narrative analysis itself is neoformalism (David Bordwell, Kristin Thompson, Barry Salt) and cognitive narratology (Edward Branigan), which served to define documentary films with a high degree of narration. The study of motivations and development, time and space in the film was employed in order to describe narrative strategies chosen by the filmmakers. The analysis has proved that DON'T LEAVE ME structures the protagonists' action and speech as a story. Furthermore, it was shown that the analysed film can be classified as a documentary film with a high degree of narration and that it systematically utilizes numerous methods of the classical film. The contribution of this thesis is to demonstrate a specific manner of analysing the narration of (highly) narrative documentary films through narratological means; it is thus possible to...

Narratological and Ideological Analysis of the Building Novel in Czech Literature in the Years 1948-1953 on the example of the Václav Řezáč novel - Nástup
Raymanová, Zuzana ; Češka, Jakub (advisor) ; Fulka, Josef (referee)
In 1948 Czechoslovakian Communist come to power. Their goal is to conquer all segments of society and to promote socialist ideology. The literature has become an important instrument to promote socialism. Official art is dominated by the only permitted aesthetic norm so called socialist realism. A form of socialist realism is constructive novel. One of the most important author is Václav Řezáč and his novel Nástup. Socialist realism can be seen as a mythical system according to Roland Barthes, so as a utterance that hides the historicity and acts as something natural and obvious. Narratological and thematic analysis attempting to expose this myth and revealing strategies, which was formed. Narratological analysis argue against the widely accepted view, that the former literature was written in classic narrative and the use of traditional means of text construction. The aim is to show that the novel is written in a modern narrative, but with the preservativ of the traditional semantic framework, which allows efficient expansion of ideology.
